Faced with the growing demand for FinTech solutions in many African countries where access to finance hinders socio-economic development, what role can innovative regulation play in assisting financial inclusion?

Data is becoming the common raw material, across sectoral boundaries, its volume and flow across borders continuing to grow exponentially; this presents new challenges for the intersection of traditional sector-specific regulatory mandates with those of privacy, security and competition agencies.

With the acceleration of digital financial services, consumer protection and data privacy concerns continue to generate strategic business challenges for financial institutions. Unfair, deceptive, abusive acts or practices has been expanding to keep pace with financial innovations that are reaching more consumers.

Fraudulent payments are growing in volume as consumers embrace new payment options like real-time payments and person-to-person (P2P) payments. Fraud detection solutions currently in use were not designed to meet the demands of these new payment channels resulting in low fraud detection and high false positives.

Digital transformation is becoming further intertwined with cloud migration across financial services. The flexibility, scalability, security and resilience that cloud environments offer are far superior and incomparable with their predecessors, and financial institutions across the board recognise this value.

With the financial services ecosystem extending beyond traditional institutions to encompass FinTechs, BigTechs and cloud providers, more collaboration is needed amongst these parties and with regulators, to drive efficient change and overcome knowledge gaps.

Digital money is drawing stronger interest as the future of an increasingly cashless society. We’ve seen adoption in countries from China to the Bahamas — 86% of the world’s central banks are exploring digital currencies. The adoption of a CBDC could mean widespread use of a regulated digital currency. How can the implementation of CBDCs achieve full socio-economic potentials in emerging countries of Africa.

When we talk about the many upsides of Regulatory Technology, we sometimes forget that RegTech has not even started to tap into its real potential: the application in other industries than financial services. How can RegTech’s full scope and capacity to address the needs of not only the financial services sector be achieved
